What Is a Galaxy and How Many Stars Are Inside the One We Live In?
When you look up at the night sky, you might see tiny twinkling stars. But did you know that those stars are part of something much bigger? They belong to a giant group called a galaxy.
Letβs travel across the universe and learn all about galaxies β including the one we live in! π β¨
π A Galaxy Is a Huge Collection of Stars, Planets, and Dust
A galaxy is like a giant city in space β but instead of buildings, it has stars, planets, gas, dust, and even black holes!
Some galaxies are:
π΅ Spiral-shaped like a pinwheel
βͺ Round like a ball
πΆ Irregular β with wild and bumpy shapes!
There are billions of galaxies in the universe β and each galaxy can have billions or even trillions of stars inside it. π€―
π We Live in the Milky Way Galaxy
Our home galaxy is called the Milky Way. If you go outside on a dark, clear night, you might see a fuzzy band of stars stretching across the sky β thatβs the Milky Way!
The Milky Way has:
π About 100 billion to 400 billion stars
π Our Solar System β including the Sun and Earth
π« A giant black hole in the center!
Thatβs right β even though the Milky Way is our home, weβve only explored a tiny part of it so far. Most of it is still a mystery!
π Galaxies Float Through Space in Groups
Galaxies donβt just float alone. They travel in big families called clusters. Our Milky Way is part of a group called the Local Group, along with another big galaxy called Andromeda.
And guess what? Andromeda is slowly moving toward us! But donβt worry β it wonβt reach us for another 4 billion years. You have plenty of time to do your homework. π
So remember:
A galaxy is like a huge space neighborhood filled with stars, planets, and wonders. And the Milky Way is our very own galactic home! ππ«
